About the Michigan Gaming Control Board

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is the state agency that regulates the Detroit commercial casinos and, since 2021, online casino games, online poker and online sports betting in Michigan. Online gaming was legalised by the Lawful Internet Gaming Act of 2019, and the first online casinos and sportsbooks launched on 22 January 2021.

What a Michigan licence means for you

A Michigan licence covers players physically located in Michigan only, aged 21 or older. Online operators must partner with a Detroit casino or a Michigan tribal casino, and sites check your location.

The MGCB's Responsible Gaming Database lets you exclude yourself from all state-regulated online casino games, online sports betting, or both, for one year or five years. Licensed operators must honour it. A separate Disassociated Persons List covers the Detroit casinos.

Licensed sites must offer tools such as deposit and time limits. Since 2026 the MGCB has offered a limited number of free gambling-blocking software licences to Michigan residents.

Complain to the operator first in writing; it must reply in writing within 10 days. If that does not solve it, you can send the MGCB's internet gaming and sports betting complaint form with the operator's reply. The MGCB uses complaints to find rule breaches and can order corrective action, but it does not decide who is owed money. The Board warns that unlicensed offshore sites do not have to honour Michigan's self-exclusion database.

To check a site, see the MGCB's 'Legal vs. Illegal Gaming' page, which lists licensed online operators and the operators that have received cease-and-desist letters.
