About Spelinspektionen (Swedish Gambling Authority)
Spelinspektionen is the Swedish government agency that licenses and supervises gambling in Sweden. It took its current name on 1 January 2019, when the Gambling Act (2018:1138) opened the Swedish online market to licensed private operators; before that it was called Lotteriinspektionen. It licenses online casinos, betting, land-based gaming and, since 2023, gaming software suppliers.
What a Spelinspektionen licence means for you
A Swedish licence covers players in Sweden. Licensed sites must verify your identity and must ask you to set a deposit limit (per day, week or month) before you play. A bonus may only be offered when you first sign up.
Spelpaus is the national self-exclusion register. One sign-up blocks you from all sites with a Swedish licence for the period you choose. Licensed sites must also show a quick link to Spelpaus and to a self-test.
Spelinspektionen does not decide individual disputes about money. Complain to the operator first. Consumer disputes can then go to the National Board for Consumer Disputes (Allmänna reklamationsnämnden, ARN), which hears gambling disputes. ARN decisions are recommendations, not binding judgments.
Sweden is a strict regulator. It can fine operators, issue warnings and revoke licences, and it publishes its decisions. Gambling on credit is not allowed.

Recent rule changes
- From 1 July 2023 suppliers of gaming software to the Swedish market need their own licence.
- The gambling tax on licensed operators rose from 18% to 22% on 1 July 2024.
- Spelinspektionen is renewing its regulations. New rules on gaming machines (SIFS 2025:1) took effect on 1 December 2025, and new supervision fees (SIFS 2026:1) on 1 March 2026.
