About the Gambling Commission
The Gambling Commission is the statutory regulator for gambling in Great Britain. It was set up under the Gambling Act 2005 and took over from the Gaming Board for Great Britain in 2007. It licenses online and land-based operators that offer gambling to people in Great Britain, including casinos, betting, bingo, arcades and the National Lottery.
What a UKGC licence means for you
A Gambling Commission licence covers players in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has its own gambling law and is not covered.
Licensed online operators must check your identity and age before you can gamble. They must take part in GamStop, the national self-exclusion scheme, so one sign-up blocks you from all GB-licensed gambling websites and apps. Operators must also offer safer-gambling tools such as deposit limits and time-outs. Gambling with a credit card has been banned since April 2020.
If you have a complaint, you must first use the operator's own complaints process. If it is not solved within eight weeks, you can take it to an independent alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider that the Commission has approved. The operator must tell you which one it uses. The Commission itself does not decide individual disputes.
Your money in an account is not automatically protected if the operator goes bust. Operators must tell you, in their terms, whether customer funds are not protected, medium-protected or highly protected.
The Commission is one of the strictest gambling regulators. To check a licence, search the public register on the Commission's website by company name, account number or domain. Make sure the website you use is listed under that licence.
Recent rule changes
- From 9 April 2025 online slots have a maximum stake of £5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over. From 21 May 2025 the limit is £2 for players aged 18 to 24. These limits came from the government's 2023 Gambling Act review white paper.
- From 28 February 2025 remote operators must run a light-touch financial vulnerability check when a customer's net deposits reach £150 in a rolling 30 days. More detailed financial risk assessments were tested in a pilot. In July 2026 the Commission said it would introduce them in stages, starting with the largest operators; when fully in place they will apply when net deposits pass £1,000 in 24 hours or £3,000 in 90 days (£750 and £2,000 for under-25s). Start dates had not been set.
- A statutory levy on gambling operators took effect on 6 April 2025. It replaced the voluntary system and pays for research, prevention and treatment of gambling harm.
- From 19 January 2026 bonus wagering requirements are capped at 10 times the bonus, and promotions may no longer mix different gambling products (for example betting and casino) in one offer.

Questions
How do I check a UKGC licence?
Search the Gambling Commission's public register by company name, account number or website domain. The website you are using should be listed under that licence.
Does GamStop cover all UK online casinos?
Yes, for sites licensed by the Gambling Commission. Online licensees must take part in GamStop. It does not cover sites without a GB licence.
Can the Gambling Commission get my money back?
No. It does not settle individual disputes. Complain to the operator first, then to the operator's approved ADR provider if the issue is not solved within eight weeks.
What is the stake limit on UK online slots?
£5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24. The limits started in April and May 2025.
