About the Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission

The Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission licenses sports bookmakers and betting exchange operators in Australia's Northern Territory. It was established under the Racing and Wagering Act 2024, which came into force on 1 July 2024 and replaced the Racing and Betting Act 1983 and the former Racing Commission. Many of Australia's online bookmakers hold a Northern Territory licence and take bets from customers across Australia.

What a Northern Territory licence means for you

A Northern Territory licence covers online betting on sport and racing. It does not cover online casino games: under the federal Interactive Gambling Act 2001, online casinos and online slots may not be offered to people in Australia.

All Australian-licensed online bookmakers, including NT-licensed ones, must take part in BetStop, the national self-exclusion register run by the federal regulator ACMA since August 2023. You can exclude yourself for three months up to life. Licensed bookmakers must also offer deposit limits under the national consumer protection framework, and since June 2024 may not accept credit cards.

If you have a dispute about a bet, first try to resolve it with the bookmaker. You can then lodge a complaint with the Commission, normally within 14 days after the bet is resulted. The Commission decides betting disputes and publishes its decisions. It does not handle compensation claims, customer-service complaints or BetStop complaints.

Australian wagering is closely regulated at both territory and federal level.

To check a licence, see the Commission's list of licensed wagering operators on the Northern Territory Government website.
